The safety of your employees is not something you should take for granted. It is easy to think that if you have documented safety procedures for your machines, that your employees will be safe from harm. In truth, by not having the proper safety protocols for your facility, you are doing your employees a dis-service and it may cause irreparable damage to your business.
When is it time to re-evaluate the safety of your facility? Here are some statistics from OSHA that you should consider:
According to OSHA, in Illinois alone, in the last 6 years (2015-2021):
• There have been almost 500 reported industrial incidents resulting in fracture, crushing, or amputation, directly related to conveyors. Of those incidents, 95% of them were the result of workers being caught in running equipment. 203 were limited to hospitalization, but another 270 resulted in some form of amputation.
• There were over 1100 milling and press reported incidents | 446 hospitalizations and over 900 amputations
• There were over another 400 reported incidents related to banding, strapping, and packaging. Of those, 140 were limited to hospitalizations and another 348 in amputation.
• Almost 100 extrusion related incidents | 37 hospitalizations and 69 amputations
That is just the tip of the iceberg. There were over 12,000 reported incidents requiring a minimum of 500 hospitalizations and over 9000 amputations.
